WEEK 14 - NONE of the feels.

We're on a guest teacher roll! This week, Nim Ben-Reuven teaches us the art of the de-motivational phrase.

Hello and welcome to Week 14 of #HOMwork!

This week, we have a special guest assignment from Nim Ben-Reuven. Nim is a lettering artist and video producer living in Brooklyn, NY. He wants you to know that he spends most of his time staring at the ceiling and pretending to do work if people are looking. When he's not scribbling some nihilistic lettering, you can find him constructing robo-friends out of cardboard just because.

Make sure to check out his website and follow him on Instagram. It's always such a snarky delight when it pops up in my feed.

From Nim:

This week, your assignment is to take any of the inspirational words / quotes out there and twist them around to be a little more sinister, self-aware, absurd or just downright mean-spirited. All in the name of good fun, of course!

There is such an overwhelming unsolicited, positive life advice out there that we need to balance it out with whatever is the opposite of that. For me, too many calls for "positive vibes" and "following your bliss" leads to a disconnect from a lot of people's realities, which may not be so blissful or positive at times.

And we need to remind ourselves that not being happy or #livingthedream 100% of the time is absolutely OK and can actually be beneficial to our creativity.

This kind of approach to turning platitudes on their head has been done before, but not at such large volumes at the same time. I'm hoping that we can fill the 'Gram with all sorts of gorgeousness that has a secondary level of darkness to it that will be both surprising and satirical. But please be tasteful in your negativity! Remember, we are making fun of the words & sayings rather than any specific group or people.

Post your final piece on Instagram with the hashtag #HOMwork. Make sure to tag both me @nim_br and Lauren @homsweethom in your post, too. We’ll both be featuring our favorite pieces in our Story all week, so make sure to post yours before the next challenge goes out on Friday, 3/23."

Love,
Nim and Lauren

Lauren Hom is a designer, letterer, and educator. A self-proclaimed "artist with a business brain", she picked up hand lettering as a hobby while studying advertising in college. Over the next few years (and thanks to the power of the internet), she leveraged a few clever passion projects into a thriving design career.

When she's not designing, you can probably find her cooking an elaborate vegetarian meal at home or finally making her way through the niche craft supplies she bought last year.
