WEEK 27 - This one's gonna be a piece of cake!
Hey HOMwork friends, happy Friday!
(If this is your first time joining us, take a peek at our Challenge Archive for all previous assignments.)
This week I want to share a simple brainstorming tip with you!
A formula I often use to brainstorm new ideas for personal work is to take something familiar and then change *one* thing about it.
I’ll take a common phrase, visual, or cliche and change it slightly to createcontrast with something funny, unexpected, or relatable. I’ve found it’s a great way to insert my sense of humor and personality into something my audience is already familiar with.
Contrast doesn’t always mean as much contrast as possible. Often small and simple tweaks can be just as delightful and impactful as a complete 180. It's a great way to play with your audience's expectations.
One of my favorite things about being an illustrator is putting together ideas or scenarios that would probably never occur in real life. Like bringing internet speak into a physical space...which leads us to this week’s assignment.
OMG FREE BRUSHES!
Awww yeah - as a HOMwork subscriber, you get the two FREE Procreate brushes I drew this week's artwork with, courtesy of DesignCuts.

Your Assignment: Design or illustrate a cake for an unconventional celebration or occasion.
We're used to seeing messages on cakes that are sweet, celebratory and uplifting, which makes it the perfect opportunity to add something unexpected to surprise and delight your audience. Your message doesn't need to be grim or the antithesis of "Happy Birthday" (unless you really want to get dark with it)...just something that you find funny and unconventional.
A few thought starters:
What are things you would never actually celebrate?
What are things that seem too mundane or ridiculous to celebrate?
What are some things you’d never actually say to someone?
Check out @drunkbakers for some unconventional cake inspo, or thisNSFW cake that really got me & my college girlfriends chucklin'.
Caption Idea: Tell us why you baked this weirdo cake (perhaps there's a funny backstory?). Plus, ask your audience what unconventional phrase they'd like to see written on a cake!
Don't forget to tag me @homsweethom and use the hashtag #HOMwork so I can see what you come up with for your cakes. I'll be sharing my faves in my Stories all week!
