WEEK 33 - We're going on a road trip...and you're driving!
Woah, it's Week 33 of HOMwork 2019!
(If this is your first time joining us, take a peek at our Challenge Archive for all previous assignments.)
This week, I was a guest on my friend Amy Tan's creative podcast, Craft a Life You Love, and we ended up talking a ton about...cars?
Ironically, I don’t have a car and I haven't driven one in years, but it turns out that cars, gas, and road trips are kinda the perfect metaphor for leading a creative life.
I was telling Amy about this moment of clarity I had when I was burning out at my full time job as an art director in late 2013. I was miserable and thinking to myself, “The agency isn't going to change, the workload isn’t going to change, the hours aren’t going to change...so the only thing have the ability to change if I want the situation to be different is my position in it.”
That moment of clarity reminded me that I'm in the one in the driver's seat of my life & career. Even now, almost 5 years after making the decision to leave my agency job and go freelance, I sometimes forget that I’m the one behind the wheel.
We’re all at different places on our creative journeys, and it is important to remember that's just what they are: journeys. You have control over where you're headed, where you want to stop, when you need some creative gas, or if you need to make a complete U-turn. Inspired by my chat with Amy on her podcast, this week's assignment is all about honoring where you are in your journey and reflecting on how far you've come.
OMG FREE BRUSHES!

Your Assignment: Design a ‘Welcome to _____’ road sign for the place you're currently at in your creative journey.
Here are some ideas to get you started:
Welcome to Dream Client
Hard work pays off!
Welcome to Just Went Freelance
We don’t know what a 1099 is either.
Welcome to Creative Blocktown
Population: Feels like 1
Caption Idea: Take some time to reflect on where you’re at on your creative road trip: the good, the bad, where your next stop might be, and what kind of "gas" it might take to get you there.
Don't forget to tag me @homsweethom because I'll be sharing my faves in my Story all week.
Love,
Lauren
