WEEK 44 - Today is my birthday! Celebrate with me? :)

What!? It's week 44 of HOMwork 2019!

For those of you just joining us, you can see 80+ past assignments in our Challenge Archive. No pressure to complete them all, but many of you have asked, so here you go!

Today is my 29th birthday :)

If you follow along on my Instagram adventures you’ll know that I just finished up a whirlwind week at Adobe MAX where I was a speaker this year. My talk was about basing a business on being silly because that’s what I’ve done with my adult life (so far, haha). You can watch the video replay here!

I’m not sure that Lauren from 8 years ago would quite recognize the Lauren I am today, but I know young Lauren would LOVE how all of this is shaking out.

Related topic: I just finished reading You Are a Badass by Jen Sincero (which is a super fun and useful book if you’re looking for an empowering self-help kinda read). Every chapter opens with a quote, many by famous, powerful, or wise women.

In one of the last chapters of the book, Sincero quotes herself.

At first I was kind of taken aback because… wow. That’s a ballsy move! But then I was like, why not? Why shouldn’t a New York Times Bestselling author quote herself on a book about empowerment and being a total badass?

Why NOT believe the stuff you say is valuable, interesting, and profound?

Why NOT quote yourself?!

I got where I am by believing that my perspective on life - and art - is worth sharing. I believe I have a unique perspective that deserves to be out in the world. And I LOVE sharing it and delighting other people with it. That basic belief has been the foundation of a lot of my success over the last few years.

In other words: I believe that what I have to say is worth listening to.

So this week’s assignment (my birthday week!) is all about giving yourself credit for your awesome and quote-worthy thoughts! It doesn’t have to be motivational; it can be something you’re known for saying or some quote-worthy advice you’ve doled out in the past. Inside jokes are also great option, as are special nuggets of wisdom or insight you’re especially fond of.

Quote yourself. Because you are quoteworthy.

'Think of people who unfollow you as raisins in your trail mix that you didn't really want anyway.' quote by Lauren Hom.

Your Assignment: Letter or design a quote from yourself! And make sure to attribute it to yourself

Helpful anecdote to get the ideas churning: My friend Sophie once gave me the most profound piece of advice I’ve ever received. in college, we had both had a *bit* too much to drink, and I started crying about my current boyfriend and lamenting over the fact that I let the last boyfriend go and who should I really be with and what is life anyway????

And then Sophie put my drunk head on her drunk shoulder, gave me a reassuring hair stroke, and said (slurred?), “It's okay...(your current boyfriend) is right for right now, and that’s just fine.”

It may sound like a silly story, but this was over 8 years ago and I still think about that sentence at least every few weeks. If Sophie was going to do this HOMwork, that’s totally the quote she would use.

Don't forget to tag me @homsweethom because I'll be sharing my faves in my Story all week. Can't wait to see your totally quoteworthy words immortalized on the 'gram!

Love,
Lauren

P.S. If you made all the way to the end of this email, you're one of the first to know that I just sneakily reopened enrollment for Passion to Paid one last time in 2019 due to popular demand! If these assignments have made you feel more creative and motivated, Passion to Paid will teach you how to take things to the next level by coming up with your very own passion project.

FYI, this is my most popular class and it's getting a *major* update in 2020, so this is the LAST time you'll be able to get the class for the original price (it's been the same since 2017!).

Enrollment ends in 9 days, so
click here to grab your spot :)

Lauren Hom is a designer, letterer, and educator. A self-proclaimed "artist with a business brain", she picked up hand lettering as a hobby while studying advertising in college. Over the next few years (and thanks to the power of the internet), she leveraged a few clever passion projects into a thriving design career.

When she's not designing, you can probably find her cooking an elaborate vegetarian meal at home or finally making her way through the niche craft supplies she bought last year.
