WEEK 48 - Want to keep your goals 💯 in the New Year?

Hey HOMwork friends, happy Friday!

(If this is your first time joining us, take a peek at our Challenge Archive for all previous assignments.)

I'm excited to introduce Kristle Marshall as this week's guest #HOMwork teacher (and Hom Sweet Hom's very first full-time designer)! Scroll down to learn about Kristle + how we started working together.

Kristle Marshall

Kristle Marshall is a multidisciplinary artist who lives and works in Southeast Michigan. She studied photography at Savannah College of Art & Design and is now pursuing her true passion as a letterer and illustrator!

Fun story of how we met: I met Kristle after an AIGA talk I gave in Detroit last November, though I already knew of her because a few months prior she had won a scholarship to my passion project class.

Six months later, I found myself swamped with work and realized I needed some help in the studio, so I reached out to her to ask if she wanted to do a paid summer internship with me. Luckily, she said yes and having her lend a creative hand in the studio was a total game-changer. At the end of the summer, I offered her a full-time job and the rest is history :)

From Kristle:

We are already heading into another election year and the air will be thick with talk of policy and big promises. When we participate in the election process, we are taking stock of what has been, deciding if it’s in line with our visions for the future, and voting for the person we believe will take us where we want to go.

This process is strikingly similar to what we do around the coming of the new year. The big, beautiful difference, is that you don’t need the popular vote to swear in and get to work on the future you want for yourself, your family or your community. YOU are the leader of your world. When you make resolutions, you are selecting your very own policies for the year to come. As you start to share these goals with others, it’s as if you are campaigning and rallying support for the changes you want to make in your life. You can even select your own cabinet of accountability partners and put checks in place to help you stay on track.

It’s become popular to check in on newly elected presidents in the first 100 days of their first terms. We assess and discuss what the administration has done since taking office—it gives us some sense of where we are headed. What if we took that concept and used it to snatch our resolutions out of the abstract and turn them into smaller, actionable benchmarks?

Your Assignment: Think of a hundred-day goal and turn it into your own 2020 rally poster.

As you get ready to take office in 2020 what’s the most important thing you want to get started on? Make a list of big goals/ideas that you have for the year and think of something that you can realistically do in 100 days to get you closer to reaching that goal. Pick the one that you are most excited about!

I took Lauren’s Passion to Paid course in 2018 and came out of it with so many great leads for projects. Since then, progress has been slow. I’ve been seeing so many great projects being launched and feel more invigorated than ever to get my act together! I know that I can make my passion project debut within the first 100 days of 2020 (feel free to call me out). Now it’s your turn.

Caption Idea: Tell us a little more about your goal and the bigger resolution that inspired it. Think of who can be instrumental in helping you make your 100-day plan a success. What tools do you need? What are some obstacles you might encounter and how will you overcome them? Check back in mid-April to see how you did and what you can do to change the momentum or keep it up!

Don't forget to tag @homsweethom and @kristhecreative in your posts, then follow and use the hashtag #HOMwork so we can see your aspirations for the start of the new year. We’ll be sharing our faves in our Stories all week!

x,

P.S. There are dream clients out there who desperately need your creative services and want to pay you, but they don’t know where to find you. You have to put yourself out there and go find them!

This doesn't have to mean sending cold email pitches; you can also get on someone's radar by creating & sharing work that relates to their industry and/or by being an engaged fan of what they do (buying their products, joining their challenges, sharing their content on social media, attending their events, etc).

Curious about how you can attract more client work? Check out this video Q&A I did a few weeks ago! Or if you're curious about specifically doing work for magazines, click here to watch the new video I just posted about landing editorial illustration jobs.

Lauren Hom

Lauren Hom is a designer, letterer, and educator. A self-proclaimed "artist with a business brain", she picked up hand lettering as a hobby while studying advertising in college. Over the next few years (and thanks to the power of the internet), she leveraged a few clever passion projects into a thriving design career.

When she's not designing, you can probably find her cooking an elaborate vegetarian meal at home or finally making her way through the niche craft supplies she bought last year.
