WEEK 25 - Self care should NOT be rare - here’s why.

Hey there, thanks for joining us for Week 25 of HOMwork 2020!

Over the last few weeks, I’ve had moments where self care feels selfish because the world is in so much pain.

But I’ve had to remind myself that rest is a necessary part of sustaining *anything* in life, whether that’s growing a business, raising a family, or fighting for social justice.

This week's assignment was inspired by an excerpt from an insightful post by activist Rachel Cargle:

“There is a crucial self care and social justice component to our collective wellness.

Meditate AND call your senator.

Go to yoga AND go vote.

Breathe deeply AND donate to causes that matter.

Go on a retreat AND go support small businesses.

Enjoy your essential oils AND check people on their bullshit in the community."

Her words were the reminder I needed that we can make space for lots of things in our lives: the silly, the serious and everything in between.

It also reminded me of something my good friend Andy J. Pizza told me about balancing client work and personal work as an artist: "One for them, one for me."

Meaning that after you finish a client project (that perhaps wasn't the most thrilling but helped pay the bills), you should make time to work on a personal project that fills you up creatively.

If you've been feeling overwhelmed lately, this assignment is your reminder that you need to make space for personal joy and social justice. For working on your Animal Crossing island and working on building an equitable business. You get the point :)

Your assignment: Letter or illustrate a piece that includes 1 action you're taking for your well-being and 1 action you're taking for society's well-being.

(If you're having a hard time coming up with ideas, Rachel's words at the beginning of this email are a good place to start!)

For me, it's allowing myself to have fun AND donating money to causes I care about like Color of ChangeNational Bail Out and Detroit Justice Center. I'm fortunate to have built a business that's still working in this tough economic climate, so money is one of my resources I'm putting into action.

Caption idea: Share the 'why' behind both of your actions, and get specific! If your societal action is 'volunteering', tell us where you volunteer and why you do it. If your personal action is 'taking a bath', tell us why it fills your tank back up.

Post your finished artwork to Instagram before the next assignment comes out with the hashtag #HOMwork2020 and tag me @homsweethom because I’ll be sharing some of my favorites in my IG Story.

Can't wait to be inspired by seeing what you create & reading about what actions you're taking!
