WEEK 27 - A rising tide lifts all boats! ⛵️

Hey there, thanks for joining us for Week 27 of HOMwork 2020!

This week we are going to revisit an old prompt with a new lens - creative resources!

Recently, I received an email from a multidisciplinary artist in Detroit - Ndubisi Okoye. Ndubisi explained that he was inspired by my creative toolbox to create one of his own, especially because those resources aren't typically available to young Black creatives. After Ndubisi posted his creative toolbox, I realized he was friends with one of my creative buds, Adé Hogue, who then posted a list of his creative tools & resources on his site (bottom of the page)!

I love this “chain reaction” of creative entrepreneurs finding inspiration through others sharing with their community and, in turn, creating resource repositories for their own audiences. While there is a fine line between the work we creative entrepreneurs choose to do for free and the work we are paid for, I think this kind of thing is TOTALLY the stuff we should be sharing freely with our communities!

Sharing what we know makes the industry more accessible and demystifies what it takes to be a creative entrepreneur. You’re making quality information available to other creatives, which helps to improve the quality of our entire field!

Bonus points: it also happens to be great for your business. Sharing resources builds camaraderie with your peers, generates goodwill, and creates a space that your audience will want to return to. It also promotes accessibility and equity. Wins all around, amirite?

Which brings me to this week’s assignment…

Your assignment: Illustrate 5-10 creative resources that are/have been key to your creative or entrepreneurial work.

For my own artwork, I chose to focus on creative books that have helped me immensely. In the older version of this assignment, I focused on art supplies and tech. You could focus on digital tools, productivity apps, exceptional teachers, books, physical supplies, other resource lists - anything that is (or has been) important to your work.

Caption idea: explain the significance of each item! Think specifically of making these resources accessible to young creatives as you compose your caption.

  • Why are these resources so useful to you?

  • How did you learn about them or how to use them?

  • What makes them “key” to your work as a creative entrepreneur?

I can’t wait to see what you come up with and I can’t wait to learn about some new resources. This kind of assignment always adds some great stuff to my own creative toolbox.

Make sure to use the hashtag #HOMwork2020 and tag me @homsweethom when you post your creative resources to Instagram! I love going through all the awesomeness you create and sharing some of my favorites on Stories.

Lauren Hom is a designer, letterer, and educator. A self-proclaimed "artist with a business brain", she picked up hand lettering as a hobby while studying advertising in college. Over the next few years (and thanks to the power of the internet), she leveraged a few clever passion projects into a thriving design career.

When she's not designing, you can probably find her cooking an elaborate vegetarian meal at home or finally making her way through the niche craft supplies she bought last year.
