WEEK 10

This week, I'm excited to introduce Lindsey Bailey as our guest teacher!

Lindsey Bailey is an artist and illustrator based in Olive Branch, MS. She has worked on editorial illustration, character design, book covers, children's books, and portraits for clients including Black Dog & Leventhal Publishers, Bleacher Report, The Georgia Review and ESPN.

Lindsey was also part of the very first Passion to Paid class I ever taught! During the course, she created a passion project that combined her love of illustration with mythology. She turned the series of illustrations into a deck of playing cards and raised $1,500 on Kickstarter to produce them!

You know there's nothing I love more than 1) creative people bring ideas to life and 2) artists getting paid for work they love...so naturally Lindsey's project is the inspiration behind this week's assignment.

From Lindsey:

Modern Day Myth was born from me wanting to create a physical product showcasing my work. During Lauren's class, I created a handful of mind maps and gravitated towards creating something revolving around Greek mythology.

As a little girl, I devoured an old, beat up copy of "Mythology" by Edith Hamilton. With my work focusing on the representation of people of color (specifically Black people), I decided to create a modern (and less homogeneous) playing card deck.

I hope this prompt will inspire you to add your own twist to ancient myths and deities!

Your assignment: Design a playing card based on a myth, fable, or story.

As always, don’t forget to use the hashtags #HOMwork & #HOMwork2021 & tag @lindseyswop and @homsweethom when you post your work. We’ll be sharing our favorites in our Stories all week :)

P.S. You can support Lindsey's work and buy the Modern Day Myth Deck here! We've got one in the Hom Sweet Hom studio that we enjoy.

Lauren Hom

Lauren Hom is a designer, letterer, and educator. A self-proclaimed "artist with a business brain", she picked up hand lettering as a hobby while studying advertising in college. Over the next few years (and thanks to the power of the internet), she leveraged a few clever passion projects into a thriving design career.

When she's not designing, you can probably find her cooking an elaborate vegetarian meal at home or finally making her way through the niche craft supplies she bought last year.
