WEEK 12 - you're not alone in feeling this way
Recently, I've started feeling more hopeful.
Most of my closest friends and I have gotten our first vaccine!
I've started receiving work inquiries that require travel for the first time in a long time!
The sun is shining and the weather is warming up!
Of course, all of this is set against the backdrop of a year of collective isolation, fear, grief, and uncertainty...which makes this hopefulness kind of bittersweet.
But I realized that life is always a mixed bag of feelings. There's space for the good, the bad and everything in between, oftentimes existing simultaneously.
So this week, I wanted to bring back a popular assignment from 2018 that encapsulates this idea perfectly. I want it to serve as a reminder that we're complex, emotional people, and there's no "right" or "wrong" way to feel.
During my travels in 2016, I made it a point to draw in my sketchbook more often and started lettering my feelings from each week. I titled this mini-series "Weekly Feels" and posted them on Instagram.
I found this exercise to be a fun way to practice my lettering AND a healthy way to reflect on my week. In addition to this, people seemed to really love when I posted these, not only for the lettering but for the vulnerability.
I started seeing tons of "YES I'M NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO FEELS THAT WAY" and "Totally been thinking about this lately too!" comments popping up on my posts, which allowed me to connect with my community even more.
Which leads me to this week’s assignment…
Your assignment: Letter and/or illustrate your thoughts and emotions from the week.
One important realization I've had since this assignment was first published is that our feelings don't define us. The emotions or words you write down on the page this week aren't representative of YOU as an entire person, they're simply a time capsule of your recent feelings.
Since we're posting these publicly, feel free to share as much or as little as you want. I personally find a lot of value in being fairly open with my community, but it's 100% up to you what types of feelings or thoughts you choose to illustrate in your piece this week.
Caption idea: Elaborate a bit more on some of the feelings you wrote down or tell us about some of the experiences that prompted them. There's no right or wrong way to approach this assignment - it's open to your interpretation.
Don’t forget to tag me @homsweethom and use the #HOMwork & #HOMwork2021 hashtag when you post on Instagram. I love looking through your creations and sharing a few of my favs every week in my IG Stories before the next assignment is posted.
Looking forward to seeing your Weekly Feels!
