WEEK 8

December 2024 Update: I’m no longer represented by this agent because he failed to pay me for a significant amount of work I’d already completed. I no longer endorse him and am deeply disappointed, both personally and professionally, by his actions. ☹️

This week we have my agent, Ryan Appleton as a guest teacher!

Ryan is the co-founder of Co-Loop, an artist management agency built on a core value of collaboration over competition. With over 8 years of experience working in the commercial art and advertising industry, he manages all of my client projects, brand partnerships and speaking engagements...

...so I can focus on the stuff I’m really good at like drawing, being a knowledgable weirdo on social media and creating new online courses (like the 4-week portfolio updating class I'm hosting starting March 15th).

Fun fact: Ryan LOVES movies, but since movie theaters closed in 2020, he's watched nearly 2,000 episodes of Sesame Street with his daughter and somehow still had time to manage my business?! That’s impressive!

From Ryan:

This week Co-Loop launched our Creative Podcast Network, built on the same foundation of core values that the artist management was established upon, and with the goal best summarized by this quote from Garry Shandling:

"Give what you didn't get."

For co-founder Andy J. Pizza and myself, the mindset of representation for podcasters became a no-brainer once we realized not only the massive impact that our ability to extend the same level artistic management support and advocacy would have, but also that we could openly provide the wealth of knowledge we have for creating a successful podcast in order to best facilitate and invest in their growth.

We wanted to help be the extension of their podcasting effort by giving what we couldn't find elsewhere in the world for creatives in this wild west world of podcasts.

We're excited to enter this new adventure with 6 greatly inspiring, motivating, and unique creative shows from a wide range of mediums:

And now I want to encourage you to offer up the unique knowledge that you have, a piece of valuable strategy or a lesson learned the hard way, that you wish someone had previously imparted to you.

Your assignment: Share a piece of knowledge or valuable insight you have with the world, but in the form of fictional podcast cover art, inspired by your current favorite podcast.

When packaging up this knowledge into a succinct and powerful phrase or quote, I want to see it take the form of podcast cover art for a fictional podcast (or maybe a podcast you may one day start).

Imagine you are establishing your own presence in the podcasting space to facilitate an ongoing platform for sharing the unique insight you have to offer with the world!

Don’t forget to use the hashtags #HOMwork & #HOMwork2021 & tag @coloopco and @homsweethom when you post your work. And while you're at it, tag Co-Loop co-founder & host of Creative Pep Talk @andyjpizza too (think of him as our TA)!

We’ll be sharing our favorites in our Stories all week :)

x Ryan & Lauren

P.S. Lauren here, with a message for my fellow portfolio updating procrastinators: if you're ready to *finally* check it off your to-do list like I am, get your butt in this upcoming class! I'll be right there with you, resizing JPGS and re-writing my 'About Me' a dozen times.

Lauren Hom

Lauren Hom is a designer, letterer, and educator. A self-proclaimed "artist with a business brain", she picked up hand lettering as a hobby while studying advertising in college. Over the next few years (and thanks to the power of the internet), she leveraged a few clever passion projects into a thriving design career.

When she's not designing, you can probably find her cooking an elaborate vegetarian meal at home or finally making her way through the niche craft supplies she bought last year.
