WEEK 32 - Lessons learned = wisdom earned.
Hello and welcome to Week 32 of #HOMwork!
For those of you just joining us, you can see all of the past assignments in our Challenge Archive. No pressure to complete them all, but many of you have asked, so here you go!
Ten years ago, I was a teenager full of unbridled creativity. I spent my time doodling on notebooks during class, painting canvases in my room, and awkwardly trying to teach myself Adobe Photoshop (CS3 on a white plastic Macbook, anyone?).
I was a junior in high school with dreams of turning drawing into a career...but not a lot of confidence in those dreams.
This led me to study advertising (a seemingly more practical career path) instead…
which led me to getting a job at a big ad agency...
which led me to completely burning out from work within a year.
Luckily, my creativity never stopped running in the background. I stumbled across lettering during my sophomore year of college and fell in love with it...
which led me to starting my Daily Dishonesty blog...
which led me to getting hired to do lettering work...
which led me to building a business that has me drawing every day…
which is what I dreamed of ten years ago.
It wasn’t until I trusted my creativity, not practicality, to take the reins that I started to find my way in my career.
If I could go back in time and say anything to 17 year-old me, I’d sit her down and say, “Creativity is your superpower. Trust it. Let it guide you. It won’t let you down.”
This week, I’ve partnered with Adobe Creative Cloud to encourage us all to reflect on how much we’ve all grown by asking ourselves this question:
If you could go back in time, what advice would you give to your younger self?
Your assignment is to think of a meaningful answer to this question & then use it to create a piece of artwork.
As always, the second part of the challenge is to post your creation on Instagram with the hashtag #HOMwork and tag me @homsweethom and @AdobeDrawing so we can see what you created!
In the caption, tell us why this piece of advice would’ve been helpful to your younger self. What do you know now that you didn’t know back then?
Bonus points for creating your piece in purple using Adobe Sketch, Adobe Draw or Photoshop this week! My piece was created using Adobe Sketch on my iPad.
Make sure to complete and post your work before the next challenge comes out if you want a chance to be featured in my Story. Tagging me and @AdobeDrawing will help to ensure that we don't miss your work :)
I hope this challenge gives you time to reflect on how much you’ve learned in your lifetime so far (and also gets you excited about what’s yet to come).
Looking forward to seeing all of the wisdom you share this week!
