Hello and welcome to Week 43 of #HOMwork!

This week we have a very topical, very important assignment presented by another incredible guest teacher, Jessica Walsh!

Seriously, does this woman even need an introduction?! Jessica Walsh is a NYC-based designer, art director, and partner at Sagmeister & Walsh. Her client list includes Jay-Z, Barneys, The New York Times, Levi's and The Museum of Modern Art, among many others. Jessica's work has won almost every major design award and has been featured in numerous books, galleries, museums, and magazines worldwide.

She's a huge inspiration to so many creatives I know, and, if you're not already, you should follow her on Instagram.

From Jessica:

Do you care about the rights of women / minorities / lgbtq+ / gun reform / environmental reform among many other important social issues, and want to use design to make a difference?

Fed up with the current administration?! I invite you to use your design & lettering skills as a tool to encourage everyone you know to get out to the voting booth this week. Election day is this Tuesday, November 6th, and it’s incredibly important to vote! If the Democrats win the Senate, it would be a huge win for many social causes & progressive reform.

This week's #HOMwork is an exercise in civic duty:

Create something to inspire your followers to get out to VOTE or to promote a social cause you believe in. If you get stuck, you can use my @pinswontsavetheworldproject as the visual inspiration for your piece.

As designers & illustrators, we have incredible tools to communicate ideas and activate change. Now is the time to take action and make a difference. It’s voting week, so let's inspire all of our followers to get out to the polls!

As always, post your work using the hashtag #HOMwork. In the caption pledge your plan to vote and tell us what social issues you're most passionate about.

Don’t forget to tag me @homsweethom and @jessicawalsh in your posts so we can see what causes you're voting for. We'll both be sharing our faves in our Stories all week leading up to the election.

Love,
Jessica & Lauren

P.S. It can feel daunting to take a stance (let alone a political stance) with your work if you've never done it before. Trust me, I've been there. But like Jessica mentioned, we have an incredible tool to help communicate ideas and activate change, so this week, I encourage you to try using your art to stand up for what you believe in. I'll be doing the same. We're in this together!

Lauren Hom is a designer, letterer, and educator. A self-proclaimed "artist with a business brain", she picked up hand lettering as a hobby while studying advertising in college. Over the next few years (and thanks to the power of the internet), she leveraged a few clever passion projects into a thriving design career.

When she's not designing, you can probably find her cooking an elaborate vegetarian meal at home or finally making her way through the niche craft supplies she bought last year.
