WEEK 42 - Trick or Treat Yourself!

Go On, Play With Your Food!

"Trick or Treat" tactile lettering with candy corn and taffy by Becca Clason.

Welcome to Week 42 of #HOMwork! This week we have a returning guest teacher, the wonderfully talented, Becca Clason!

If you’re not familiar with Becca’s work, you’re in for a treat (literally, because she specializes in food lettering). She and her husband, Josh, run a creative video production company right outside of Salt Lake City, Utah. Becca has created work for clients like Starbucks, LaCroix, American Express and Target, and she also founded Letter West, an annual lettering retreat (follow @letter_west on Instagram to stay in the loop on when ticket sales open). Make sure to follow her on Instagram for a multitude of fun personal projects too.

From Becca:

Halloween is one of my favorite holidays. I love choosing a costume, painting my face elaborately, watching a slightly spooky movie or two, making Halloween-themed party foods, and eating (you guessed it) Halloween candy. For the past few years, I've made it a point to create Halloween lettering designs using candy, and doing so always brings me an inordinate amount of joy. I can't tell you how much people love seeing nice lettering made out of candy. So let's spread that Halloween candy love and give the world a little extra treat!

This week's #HOMwork is a chance to use your sweet tooth:

Halloween is a mere five days away, and so is all the candy that comes with it! This week's assignment is to create a Halloween related word or phrase using only candy. (Bonus points if you animate your design somehow.)

You can use real, tactile candy to create your design, like in my examples, or you can illustrate your candy by hand or digitally. Whichever medium you choose, candy is the name of the game. When choosing your candy consider color, size, and shape—wrapped or unwrapped and make sure to get enough in case you're the kind of person who gets hungry while you work!

If you happen to live in a country that doesn't celebrate All Hallows Eve, this is your chance to celebrate it in your own way: with lettering!

If you're stuck on phrases, here are some ideas to get you thinking:

Trick or Treat!
October
Eat, Drink, and Be Scary
Boo!
Happy Halloween
All Hallow’s Eve
I Put a Spell on You
Spooky
Pumpkin Day
Just a Bunch of Hocus Pocus
Witch, Please.
R.I.P.
Jack-o-Lantern
Boo to You!

As always, post your work using the hashtag #HOMwork. In the caption tell us about your favorite Halloween Costume you've ever worn and your favorite type of Halloween candy.

Don’t forget to tag me @homsweethom and @beccaclason, so we can see your delicious candy creations. We'll be sharing our faves in our Stories all week.

Love,
Becca & Lauren

Over the next few years (and thanks to the power of the internet), she leveraged a few clever passion projects into a thriving design career.

When she's not designing, you can probably find her cooking an elaborate vegetarian meal at home or finally making her way through the niche craft supplies she bought last year.
