WEEK 41 - In a creative rut? Try doing this.

Use your passions as a blueprint for your projects.

"Plant-based recipes, passion projects, artists making money, dirty jokes, food..." lettering by Lauren Hom.

Hello and welcome to Week 41 of #HOMwork!

You've probably heard me talk about how I built my career using passion projects like Daily Dishonesty and Will Letter for Lunch. In a way, #HOMwork is even a type of passion project!

Because of this, people often ask me, "How do I come up with a good idea for a project? Where do I even start?"

My advice?

It’s called a passion project, so start with what you (as a person, not a professional) are passionate about. Don’t worry about what you think you should be passionate about—instead focus on what actually excites you!

Speaking of excitement, I have one thing I want to share with you before we dive into this week’s passionate prompt: enrollment is officially open again for Passion to Paid, my popular 5-week guided course that teaches you how to launch your creative career with a standout passion project.

Passion to Paid by Lauren Hom

This week's #HOMwork is inspired by a brainstorming exercise we do in the course:

Your assignment this week is to make a list of all the things you’re passionate about and letter or design them into one piece.

Here are a few questions you can ask yourself to start identifying what you're passionate about:

  1. What can you not shut up about? Seriously, in your conversations with your friends, co-workers, family, or that rando at the bar...are there topics that keep cropping up that you can’t stop talking about?

  2. Where are you spending your time when you procrastinate? Take notice of what you do when you should be working, what’s that thing that’s more fun, or more interesting than the task at hand? Is there something you naturally gravitate towards?

  3. What are the things that have made you feel strong emotions lately? Pay attention to the things that have made you laugh out loud, feel hot in the face, or sent shivers down your spine in the last month or so.

As always, post your work using the hashtag #HOMwork. In the caption, tell us about the passions you discovered & if any of them were surprising to you. (Sometimes I get so caught up in day to day life that I forget to take a moment to remember what I'm truly passionate about.)

Remember, if you look to things you're already passionate about for inspiration, all of your projects will be kinda have to be passion projects. The more personal work you do that’s inspired by things you’re actually passionate about, the more likely that you’ll start getting hired for that sort of work.

Don’t forget to tag me @homsweethom, so I can take a peek at what you came up with. I'll be sharing my faves in my Story all week.

Love,
Lauren

Over the next few years (and thanks to the power of the internet), she leveraged a few clever passion projects into a thriving design career.
