WEEK 19 - It's written in the stars

Hey HOMwork friends, happy Friday!

(If this is your first time joining us, take a peek at our Challenge Archive for all previous assignments.)

This week's assignment is another exercise in wordplay, but that's no accident! As many of you know, wordplay has been a constant source of inspiration for my passion projects. As a letterer, I used to just incorporate wordplay into phrases that I was drawing, but over the course of my career, I started to think bigger.

I began to extrapolate puns into larger projects like Flour Crowns. Sure, I could've just lettered "Flour Crowns" and illustrated a bread crown and been done with it, but instead, I decided to expand on the idea and ended up making 30 different physical objects. This turned into a project that differentiated me and showed off my personality in a way a single illustration couldn't have.

Creative Tip: Take a minute this week to think about sayings, cliches, idioms, or puns and brainstorm new and bigger ways to interpret them, it just might lead to your next passion project!

Most of us have heard the common saying about destiny, "It's written in the stars". It's easy to dismiss it as wishful thinking, but believing in your goals and aspirations as if they are destined to come true is a great first step in making sure they do come true.

I know it can sound like a load of BS, but trust me on this. There is a verified correlation between speaking aloud our hopes, dreams, and goals and them coming to fruition. When we are honest and open about the things we want to achieve it can be incredibly inspiring for others, plus it gives us a sense of accountability.

Your Assignment: Letter or design a goal or aspiration out of stars, the galaxy, or some other kind of extraterrestrial interpretation.

It may sound corny to believe in “destiny” but if we don't put our goals and aspirations out there, chances are they won't come true. So
go on put it out into the universe, and see what happens.

Examples:

  • You are going to be a millionaire.

  • You'll get that book deal.

  • You are going to be the first ______.

  • Your art will change lives.

  • Your corner office awaits.

Caption Idea: Tell us why this goal or aspiration is important to you and tag a friend you want to help hold you accountable.

Extra Credit: Then set yourself a little calendar reminder for 3 months from now to go back and check in on our goal.

Don't forget to tag me @homsweethom and use the hashtag #HOMwork so I can see all the great advice. I'll be sharing my faves in my Stories all week!

Love,
Lauren

Over the next few years (and thanks to the power of the internet), she leveraged a few clever passion projects into a thriving design career.

When she's not designing, you can probably find her cooking an elaborate vegetarian meal at home or finally making her way through the niche craft supplies she bought last year.
