WEEK 23 - Life is but a meme

Hey HOMwork friends, happy Friday!

(If this is your first time joining us, take a peek at our Challenge Archive for all previous assignments.)

I'm a firm believer that the content of your work is more important than the way it looks. Yes of course, the design is important, but if what you’re creating doesn’t have any substance, chances are it will fall flat.

Which is why this week, we’re taking a cue from a medium that thrives on content over design...THE MEME!

Memes are such a powerful communication tool because they’re concise, direct, and oh-so relatable. They're the perfect snack-sized content, so it's no wonder we can spend an hour scrolling through them.

I think the most brilliant thing about memes is their ability to resonate so deeply with us, even when the joke is about something mundane. It’s a really special feeling to see something and feel like the person who posted it already knows you. When you draw on the funny, seemingly insignificant thing you notice in your own life, you can naturally infuse your work with content that will make someone say 'OMG me too!' or ‘Story of my life!’ or ‘I'm glad I’m not the only one who feels this way’.

Humor is a powerful emotion that fosters human connection, and memes are a great source of inspiration for how to come up with concise relatable material that keeps your audience engaged and gives them a feeling of personal affinity towards you.

Speaking of connecting with your audience...

Did you hear that on June 26th, I'm teaching a live webinar about strategies for standing out on social media as a lettering artist?

Your Assignment: Pick your favorite meme (or come up with your own) and design it in your style!

Caption Idea: Tell us why this meme is your favorite and what about it resonates with you.

Practice good ~internet etiquette~ Make sure you credit the original creator/source of the meme, and let them know you love their sense of humor! Do some due diligence when looking for the original source, oftentimes the creator can get lost in all the regrams. Know Your Meme is a great source to learn more about the origin and context of popular memes. If you can't find the original source, crediting the source you found it from is the next best option to practice good internet etiquette.

Don't forget to tag me @homsweethom and use the hashtag #HOMwork so I can giggle at all the memes. I'll be sharing my faves in my Stories all week!

Love,
Lauren

Lauren Hom is a designer, letterer, and educator. A self-proclaimed "artist with a business brain", she picked up hand lettering as a hobby while studying advertising in college. Over the next few years (and thanks to the power of the internet), she leveraged a few clever passion projects into a thriving design career.

When she's not designing, you can probably find her cooking an elaborate vegetarian meal at home or finally making her way through the niche craft supplies she bought last year.
