WEEK 5 - Sneak peek into my lettering tool box!

Hey HOMwork friends, happy Friday!

(If this is your first time joining us, take a peek at our Challenge Archive for all previous assignments.)

You know that old saying, “It’s a poor craftsman who blames their tools”?

Well, this week we’re not blaming tools...we’re celebrating them! One of the most exciting things for me about being an artist is the endless mediums and tools I get to work with: chalk, pencil, pen, digital brushes, food, paint, the list goes on. Through lots of experimentation over the years, I've curated a set of favorite tools in my creative arsenal.

I get asked all the time about the tools I use in my work, and I've found that some of my most engaged-with posts are the ones where I give my audience a behind-the-scenes look at my process. I also love it when I see other artists' post about the tools they’re using because it inspires me to try something new.

Your new assignment is all about sharing 'how the sausage gets made' (or, if you’re like me. how the blueberry crumb bars get made) with your audience.

OMG MORE FREE BRUSHES!

Speaking of my creative toolbox - I drew my artwork with a rad set of Procreate Inking brushes, and DesignCuts is giving you two FREE brushes from the pack!

This week’s #HOMwork assignment: Pick 10-15 of your favorite can’t-live-without art supplies and illustrate/photograph them surrounding the headline 'My Creative Toolbox' (or whatever you refer to your tools as).

The tools don't necessarily need to be art supplies like pens/pencils/paints. They could be your Wacom Tablet, a journal, a resource book, the tech you use to record your process videos, the Pokémon pencil case you've had since middle school...whatever you genuinely use to create your magic.

Some headline ideas to get you started:
"My Creative Secret Weapons"
"My Go-To Creative Resources"
"A Taxonomy of my Ride or Die Art Supplies"

Caption Idea: Tell us about the tools, why you love them, and what you make with them. (Choose your top three for the caption, then for a bonus assignment you could turn the whole list into an in-depth blog post!) Don't forget to tag the brands and show them some love too!

Engagement Tip: At the end of your caption, ask your audience what creative tools they love and to tell you in the comments. It’s a fun way to discover new art supplies to use + engage with your artistic peers.

Don't forget to tag me @homsweethom and use the hashtag #HOMwork so I can see what creative tools you're working with! I'll be sharing my faves in my stories all week!

Love,
Lauren

Lauren Hom

Lauren Hom is a designer, letterer, and educator. A self-proclaimed "artist with a business brain", she picked up hand lettering as a hobby while studying advertising in college. Over the next few years (and thanks to the power of the internet), she leveraged a few clever passion projects into a thriving design career.

When she's not designing, you can probably find her cooking an elaborate vegetarian meal at home or finally making her way through the niche craft supplies she bought last year.
