WEEK 4 - Hugs + kisses VS. memes & tacos

Hey HOMwork friends, happy Friday!

(If this is your first time joining us, take a peek at our Challenge Archive for all previous assignments.)

First off - did you catch the two HOMwork Q&A videos I posted on my IGTV + Stories? I *finally* got a chance to catch up on personal work and answer the questions you've been sending in.

Watch Week 1's video answers about finding your creative voice.
Watch Week 2's video answers about the recipe for success.

We’re kicking off our first guest assignment of 2019 with my friend and former Passion to Paid student, Josh Ryan!

Josh is a designer, illustrator, and maker of thangs based out of Houston, TX. He creates products and visuals that connect people by combining shared experiences & awkward moments with a bit of humor. The most notable example of this is his Introflirted series of love notes for introverts which has featured on HuffPost, Forbes.com, and DesignTAXI. His latest project is a series of award ribbons that celebrates those less than amazing moments during lovemaking.

Introflirted by Josh Higgins.

From Josh:

You might have heard the company that makes the original candy sweethearts has shut down leaving us without our favorite chalky candies/antacids with romantic sayings this Valentine’s Day.

However, there’s no need to be upset because they will be returning in 2020. (Side note: Who is upset about this? Does anyone actually enjoy reading/eating these?) Anyway, With this loss comes an opportunity to make candy hearts better for all of us. We may not be able to change the flavor (seriously who eats these?!?), but at the very least we can update the text. From the aggressively forward “Marry Me” to the aggressively possessive “Be Mine”; or the technologically outdated “Fax Me” to the socially outdated “Smile” WE DESERVE BETTER CANDY HEARTS!

Which brings us to this week's assignment....

OMG FREE BRUSHES!

Awww yeah - as a HOMwork subscribers, you get two FREE Procreate brushes to play with every week, courtesy of DesignCuts.

This week’s #HOMwork assignment is to make a candy heart you would enjoy giving or receiving from your crush this year.

You could do a play on a classic candy heart phrase or create a whole new saying that’s all your own! If you want to use my illustrated candy heart template, click here to download the PSD. You can also watch my process video here!

In the caption be sure to tell us how you came up with your saying, what it means to you, and if you actually enjoy the taste of candy hearts.

Don't forget to tag @homsweethom and @imakethangs and use the hashtag #HOMwork so we can see your candy heart. We'll be sharing our faves in our stories all week!

Love,
Lauren and Josh

Lauren Hom

Lauren Hom is a designer, letterer, and educator. A self-proclaimed "artist with a business brain", she picked up hand lettering as a hobby while studying advertising in college. Over the next few years (and thanks to the power of the internet), she leveraged a few clever passion projects into a thriving design career.

When she's not designing, you can probably find her cooking an elaborate vegetarian meal at home or finally making her way through the niche craft supplies she bought last year.
