WEEK 8 - Do the dang thing!
Hey HOMwork friends, happy Friday!
(If this is your first time joining us, take a peek at our Challenge Archive for all previous assignments.)
This week we've got another fabulous guest teacher, the very talented Elizabeth Gray! Elizabeth is best known around the internet for being an honest introvert, drinking too much coffee, & lettering her feelings.
From Elizabeth:
I’m a firm believer in getting things done yourself instead of waiting around hoping they will happen. This type of ‘taking charge of your goals’ mentality is HUGE to me because I’ve gotten to work with brands and clients specifically because I shared work that I wanted to get hired to do or took the first step and sent out (several) emails. About six months ago I posted my first mockup of a mural and in the past few weeks, I’ve gotten contracted to complete two murals IRL.
Which is why, for my guest assignment, I want to encourage all of you to actually start creating the work you’d like to get paid to make. If you want more chalkboard clients, make more chalkboard pieces, if you want more logo clients, make hypothetical logos suites and share the heck out of them! Mockups can be a very powerful tool to help your dream clients visualize how your work will look in a real-world context like on their walls, products, or website.
OMG FREE BRUSHES!
Awww yeah - as a HOMwork subscriber, you get two FREE Procreate brushes to play with every week, courtesy of DesignCuts.

Your Assignment: Be your own client and letter/design the kind of work that you’d eventually like to get paid to make. Create a mockup of your work on products, walls, anything that makes sense for context, cards, websites, book covers, etc.!
This is your chance to show the world what you really want to be doing and give them a reason to hire you to do it!
Alternative assignment:
Instead of mocking up work in context, letter or design what it is you want to do more of, for example:
- "Make more chalkboards for weddings"
- "Become a lettering/design educator"
Caption Idea: Let us know what steps you’re going to take to accomplish that project or book that dream client. I’m not just talking about tagging them on your Instagram post and hoping they see it. I’m talking action steps. Go out and talk to them, don’t wait around for them to find you. Send that DM, send that (professional) email. Get ahold of the point of contact and start a conversation. Don’t just talk about wanting something, DO THE DANG THING!
Don't forget to tag @homsweethom and @thegraytergood then follow and use the hashtag #HOMwork so we can see the steps you're taking to make your dream project happen. We'll be sharing our faves in our Stories all week...
PLUS picking 6 artists to receive a bundle of our favorite Baron Fig products. Post your artwork to be entered for a chance to win:
- a Confidant Hardcover Notebook in Dot Grid
- a Confidant Dateless planner
- a Squire rollerball pen
Special thanks to our friends at Baron Fig for supporting this special HOMwork giveaway! Elizabeth and I love their products and use them in our work quite often, so make sure to check them out if you're in need of a new sketchbook :)
Love,
Lauren & Elizabeth
