I'm excited to introduce Chie Tamada as the first guest #HOMwork teacher of the year!

Chie Tamada is a hand lettering illustrator based in San Francisco, California. Chie loves to illustrate uplifting messages to spread positivity, promote active living, and encourage others to get creative. When she's not lettering, during the summer you can find her outdoors hiking, climbing, or racing triathlons, and in the winter plowing through the snow in Lake Tahoe.

From Chie:

If you walk down the streets in your city, you’ll likely come across a hand-painted sign. These signs are designed to be eye catching and tell you important information about a business, like if a restaurant is open or closed, if a store sells paintings or painting supplies, or if there’s a sale on apples or oranges. Some businesses also personalize their hand-painted signs by incorporating brand colors, illustrations, or messages that convey their mission and values.

Sign inspiration

A few weeks ago, I illustrated my own hand-painted sign to put up on my feed with the message “I’m Busy Taking Care of Myself”. At the time, I was experiencing burnout and needed some time away from social media to decompress, prioritize my projects, and spend time with family. I drew this illustration to let my audience know that I was taking a break and treated my feed as a digital window to hang up this announcement. To my surprise this message resonated with a ton of people, and turned out to be a fun and creative way to share my personal announcement!

Your assignment: illustrate a hand-painted sign with a personal announcement about your business or yourself that you want to hold up proudly (and digitally!) in front of your audience.

Ideas to get you started:

  • Highlight an exciting project you just kicked off

  • Tell us about a personal milestone you just reached

  • Are you expecting a baby? Or a fur-baby???

  • Share your upcoming vacation plans or social media breaks

  • Let us know what creative services you’re offering in 2020

Don’t forget to use the #HOMwork hashtag and tag @chie.tamada and me @homsweethom when you post your work on Instagram. I’ll be sharing my favorites in my Story all week!

x,

P.S. Last week, Chie recently launched an online community called Neighborly Creatives with her partner in crime Kim Van Vu. Neighborly Creatives aims to support creatives in navigating their personal and professional journey by amplifying their voices, sharing resources, building a community, and inspiring the practice of neighborly ways. They’ll be hosting monthly events, sharing creative spotlights, and providing a directory of resources aimed to bring opportunities for local creatives and businesses. If you’re based in LA or the Bay Area, definitely check it out! You can also follow them on Instagram at @neighborlycreatives.

Lauren Hom

Lauren Hom is a designer, letterer, and educator. A self-proclaimed "artist with a business brain", she picked up hand lettering as a hobby while studying advertising in college. Over the next few years (and thanks to the power of the internet), she leveraged a few clever passion projects into a thriving design career.

When she's not designing, you can probably find her cooking an elaborate vegetarian meal at home or finally making her way through the niche craft supplies she bought last year.
