WEEK 3 - Delicious seasoning and deductive reasoning?

Hey there, thanks for joining us for Week 3 of HOMwork 2020!

#HOMwork GIF stickers for Instagram Stories are finally here! The next time you share your #HOMwork in your IG Story, search for homwork in the GIF sticker section to use these fun stickers, created by my studio designer Kristle.

If you did HOMwork in early 2019, you might remember the “recipe for success” assignment. This one is kinda like that, but instead of focusing on the recipe/plan, we're focusing on the ingredients.

Since two of my favorite things are creative career development and food, I like to imagine the things that make people successful as ingredients. Like a can of “Confidence to Raise My Prices” or a jar of “Witty Instagram Captions” - no one item equals success, and every successful creative has a unique assortment of “ingredients” stocked in their pantry at all times.

For this assignment, we're going to focus on the ingredients in YOUR ideal creative pantry (both the ones you have on hand and the ones you need to shop for). What are the things you want to accomplish this year, and what are some of the ingredients you think you'll need?

The best part is that even if you don’t know all the ingredients yet - if you’re just starting (or re-starting) your creative career - you can totally reverse engineer your recipe based on the successes of people you admire!

We do this with food all the time - every great tomato sauce contains, at the very least, tomatoes and some herbs, right?

Well, that kind of deductive (and delicious) reasoning can work for us in our creative careers! If you’re not sure what “ingredients” you need to stock your own creative pantry with, look for some common “ingredients” among the careers of artists you admire. Maybe they all consistently post their work on social media? Perhaps they all work on passion projects? ;)

You might even notice some of the smaller, more specific ingredients that make your favorite artists so special. That would probably be their own particular “spice blend” (which coincidentally is what I'm focusing on fine-tuning this year, hence my artwork below).

Your assignment: Think of one (or more!) ingredient that is essential to your creative goals. Then design packaging for it as if it were a food product!

Don’t worry too much about getting your ingredients exactly right. Sure, sometimes when you use the wrong ingredients, gross things can happen. But a lot of times, you come up with something surprisingly tasty!

Ideas for Pantry Items:

  • Canned goods

  • Condiments

  • Spice tins

  • Bags of flour

  • Chocolate Chips

[NEW!] Don’t forget to use the #HOMwork and #HOMwork2020 hashtags and tag me @homsweethom when you post your work on Instagram. I’ll be sharing my favorites in my Story all week!

Can't wait to see inside of your creative cabinets.

x,
Lauren

P.S. Remember that "recipe for success" HOMwork from early 2019 I mentioned at the beginning of this email? A few months after posting it, I ended up licensing the artwork for a greeting card that's sold at Trader Joe's across the US now!

P.P.S. If you're interested in learning how art licensing for lettering works, I highly recommend taking this comprehensive course my friends Katie Johnson & Ilana Grifo put together!

Lauren Hom

Lauren Hom is a designer, letterer, and educator. A self-proclaimed "artist with a business brain", she picked up hand lettering as a hobby while studying advertising in college. Over the next few years (and thanks to the power of the internet), she leveraged a few clever passion projects into a thriving design career.

When she's not designing, you can probably find her cooking an elaborate vegetarian meal at home or finally making her way through the niche craft supplies she bought last year.
