WEEK 34
Hey there, thanks for joining us for Week 34 of HOMwork 2020!
This week, we have the amazing Kristle Marshall as a guest teacher.
Kristle Marshall is a full-time designer at Hom Sweet Hom and artist who loves all things lettering, illustration, and animation. Kristle’s mission is to create work that breaks down barriers and fosters connection.
From Kristle:
Wow, we’re already in the final days of summer. Though this year has been completely surreal, I’m really surprised at how quickly the time has gone.
One of the things I really missed this summer/year was my monthly visit to the movies. Getting up and driving myself to the theater to see a film was my way of unplugging. You have to be quiet, silence your phone, and pay attention to the story that’s in front of you. It was a nice way to reset and even be inspired.
Movies and other forms of entertainment have been linked to escapism for a very long time. Our favorite stories have a way of carrying us away from our troubles for an hour or two—or in this era of Netflix, several. Not only is great film and television a getaway, it also inspires us to face tough problems and helps us provide context in sharing our personal experiences. It’s not uncommon for us to reference movies to communicate the depth our determinations, heartbreaks, or joy.
When the situation escalated with COVID-19, I heard so many people say: “It feels like we are living in a movie.” Somehow when you hear that, you totally understand what it means.
We are living in a period when the truth is stranger than fiction and this got me thinking of all of the times that life felt so completely out there, that I couldn’t believe it. The same is likely true for you too! You are the protagonist in an ever-unfolding epic. Our lives are chock full of summertime blockbusters. So, let’s go to the movies.
Your assignment: Design a movie poster inspired by a strange or special event in your life.
My poster is inspired by the events of this year, but feel free to choose any event that has meaning to you! This is a great opportunity to dig deep and remember some of the moments you may have forgotten.
Thoughts to get you started: Think back to times that made you laugh uncontrollably, or left you in awe. Consider the genre your story fits in. Is it a romantic comedy, documentary, or an action-packed thriller? Try using some of your favorite movies as inspiration.
Caption idea: Give us a synopsis of your movie and tell us what inspired it. Who would star in the film?
Don’t forget to use the hashtag #HOMwork2020 tag @kristhecreative and @homsweethom when you post your work on Instagram. We’ll be sharing our favorites in our Stories all week!

P.S. Lately, there's been a lot of talk about sending more mail and supporting USPS.
Kristle launched a project back in April called This is Not a Bill and has been sending handmade postcards to anyone who shares something good, big or small, that has happened in their lives. Kristle loves mail and think that we should be able to expect more from our mailboxes than just bills. You can submit online via the website or even mail her your good news! Follow the project @thisisnotabill.
