WEEK 33 - BE
Hey there, thanks for joining us for Week 33 of HOMwork 2020!
I recently participated in a panel called “Fuck This Make That” with the amazing Jenna Blazevich of Vichcraft. We were talking about how we have been coping with COVID and how the pandemic has affected our business and personal lives. She said something that has been bumping around in my brain for the last few weeks:
“Lately I’ve been focusing more on who I can BE instead of what I can DO.”
Isn’t that a great flex‽ She’s using this time of uncertainty and upheaval to shift her mindset from productivity to personality. I realized that I have been trying to do something similar. So I thought it would be cool for us to do a mini version of it in this week’s assignment.
This is also a lil piggy back off of the “outgrown inherited beliefs” assignment from a few weeks ago. One of the inherited beliefs I’ve had the hardest time leaving behind is the notion that productivity is the best ways to measure my worth. And, based on your creations for that assignment, many of you have a similar inherited belief!
I’ve learned and experienced enough to know that there’s more to life than Productivity with a capital P. But it’s so fucking hard to shake that long-held faith in hustle culture. Lately, I’m trying to find ways to measure my self-worth other than only by how many items I’ve got on my to-do list.
I’m not just talking about our creative lives either. The things I want to BE include a great partner, well-rested, someone who calls themselves an artist without a shred of doubt, anti-racist, self-trusting, a responsible parent to my plants haha. Once I get out of the “do more stuff!” mindset I find that it’s actually pretty easy to pinpoint the specific kind of *person* I want to be.
Which leads me to this week’s assignment…
Your assignment: Create a “to be” list about the kind of person you want to be.
Instead of a to-do list, create a “to be” list with some of the things you’d most like to be(come) in the next few weeks, months, even years!
Idea starters for things to BE:
DIY expert
Renowned painter
Super well-traveled
Great partner
Engaged parent
Vegetarian
Ultramarathoner
Engagement tip: If there are people or businesses in your life that you look to as examples of the things on your “to be” list, tag them!!!
Explain why they’re a great example and what it is about them that you want to emulate. Even if they don’t see or respond to your post, sharing examples will give your list some extra context.
It’ll also delight your followers who love or want to emulate the same things. (Makin’ those connections!)
Make sure to use the hashtag #HOMwork2020 and tag me @homsweethom when you post your “to be” list. I’ll be sharing some of my favorites in IG Stories all week.
Can’t wait to see what you’re going to be!
x Lauren
PS: One bonus of this kind of assignment is that thinking about who you want to be can positively influence your to-do lists.
Having a clear, big picture idea of the kind of person we want to be gives us a useful way to prioritize tasks, events, commitments, etc.
For example: If “ethical foodie” is high on my “to be” list then I know I can remove certain foods from my grocery list or recipes from my “try to make” list.
