WEEK 40

Hey there, thanks for joining us for Week 40 of HOMwork 2020!

This week, we have the amazing Yao Cheng as a guest teacher!!!

Yao Cheng is a renowned artist and designer based in Columbus, Ohio. Her passion for creating art with her hands began early in childhood and has remained an integral part of who she is and what she creates today.

Founded in 2012, Yao Cheng Design is a design studio where Yao’s modern and bright designs come to life through products, commercial and licensing projects. Throughout all of her work, Yao is always striving to capture life’s beauty through color, shapes and brush strokes. Her unique approach to watercolor is defined by her use of fluid, poetic mark-making and bright colors. The result is work that is impactful and emotionally captivating.

Best known for her joyful painting style, Yao’s work can be found in Tervis, BlueSky Planners, Target, Cloud9 Fabrics, Chronicle Books, Minted, West Elm, and more.

From Yao:

When we first try something new, it can feel intimidating and scary. A fun and easy way to push aside these trepidations is to focus instead on making a simple pattern! This way, you can dive straight into the process of making and enjoy watching your ideas come to life. So go ahead, pick up that medium or use that brush, and create something fun that is just for you!

Your assignment: Create a simple pattern using a medium or tool that you are unfamiliar with, but have always been curious about!

Don’t forget to use the hashtag #HOMwork2020 & tag @yaochengdesign and @homsweethom when you post your work, too! We’ll be sharing our favorites in our Stories all week!

Lauren Hom

Lauren Hom is a designer, letterer, and educator. A self-proclaimed "artist with a business brain", she picked up hand lettering as a hobby while studying advertising in college. Over the next few years (and thanks to the power of the internet), she leveraged a few clever passion projects into a thriving design career.

When she's not designing, you can probably find her cooking an elaborate vegetarian meal at home or finally making her way through the niche craft supplies she bought last year.
