WEEK 41 - Your work as a mural?

Hey there, thanks for joining us for Week 41 of HOMwork 2020!

Are you curious about seeing your work as a mural but intimidated by the scale and skill it takes.

You're not alone! Even *I* was kinda intimidated by murals when I first started getting the creative itch to try them out.

I understand that people have a lot of blocks when it comes to transitioning up to larger scale paintings, and murals are the ultimate large scale painting.

But it turns out the skills jump isn’t actually that big!

If you’re an artist who can draw on a tablet or regular-sized piece of paper, you already have the skills to paint a mural.

Most people just need a little confidence boost to get started :)

And this week's assignment is going to help you do just that.

BONUS: to celebrate that I'm re-opening enrollment for my Mural Painting for Designers course on October 26th, this assignment is also the prompt for the TEN scholarships I'm offering to the course!

Your assignment: Mock up your artwork as a mural!

You can use an existing piece of artwork to save time, or you can create something new. All it takes to produce a good mural mock up is a digital version or scan of your art, a photo of a blank wall (you can use your own like I did or find one on sites like Unsplash and Adobe Stock), and some time in your favorite photo editing program.

Sometimes seeing really is believing, and once you see your own art up on a big wall, your brain will do that thing where it goes “Oh, actually, that looks awesome. I bet I could make that happen.”

If you’ve ever had even a little drop of curiosity about your art’s potential for murals, this is the assignment for you. We creatives are really good at dreaming big, taking action, and doing something new or cool. Mocking up your art as a mural on a large surface really helps with building that self-confidence you might need to take the leap into future paid mural work.

Caption idea: Describe your dream mural project! Don't be afraid to dream big: Where would it be - inside, on the side of a building, an installation at an event? What company or organization would it be for? If you can't think of specific details, no worries. Just do your best to describe what you'd like to paint someday. Bonus: tell me what winning this scholarship would mean to you.

Post your mural mock up to Instagram and don’t forget to use the tags #HOMwork2020 and (important!) #MPFDScholarship2020 if you want to be entered to win the scholarship.

I'll be sharing my favorites in my IG Stories all week, but please note: a feature in my Story this week isn't a confirmation of winning the scholarship because entries are open until October 30th!

Can't wait to see a flood of your beautiful mocked-up murals on Instagram in the upcoming weeks!
