WEEK 7 - Always dreamt of turning art into your job?

Hey there, thanks for joining us for Week 7 of HOMwork 2020!

Remember all the awesome sticker packs we grew up with? I was a huge fan of Lisa Frank, Hello Kitty, and anything with that holographic glitter!

Stickers are a fun, sweet way to share a message or spread some positivity. They’re ultra-portable, could go on almost any surface, and were an easy way to personalize all your gear.

Good stickers still have a place in our adult lives, especially as fun and quirky bits of encouragement for us creative types! Most of us have heard (or been on the receiving end) of some doom-and-gloom advice about our artistic endeavors. Some of us started getting the “art is just a hobby” message as kids.

Artists need more positive affirmations.

Of course, it can be tough to make a living as a freelance artist but not so tough that we should discourage people from even trying.

The best response to a big dream is encouragement and support (not discouragement or fear). It’s TOTALLY possible to make a living on art. We deserve some enthusiastic “hell yeah!” responses to our art-career dreams! Which brings me to this week’s assignment…

Your assignment: Design a sheet of art-positive stickers to spread the message that art is good!

Thought starters: Imagine the kind of stickers that would thrill a lil’ artist with big dreams. Focus on messages that encourage artists. (And don’t worry if your design isn’t super kid-oriented - even us grown ups could use the positive boost of a rad art-positive sticker!)

Ideas for sticker phrases to get you started:

  • Choose Art

  • Future Artist

  • Everyone is Creative

  • Artwork is WORK

  • Creativity Takes Courage

History boost: We did a HOMwork assignment in 2018 around a similar theme. That assignment was about the myths we heard about art, like: “you can’t make a living as an artist.” Then we lettered in a retro style to make it feel antiquated. THIS sticker assignment is combating those antiquated messages.

Don’t forget to use the #HOMwork and #HOMwork2020 hashtags and tag me @homsweethom when you post your creation. I’ll be sharing my favorites in my Story all week!

P.S. Bonus points for turning some of your art-positive stickers into Instagram Stories GIFs like these ones my studio designer Kristle made for HOMwork! She even made a how-to video - you can find it in the Creative Resource Library, one of your subscriber perks. Password is homburger :)

Lauren Hom is a designer, letterer, and educator. A self-proclaimed "artist with a business brain", she picked up hand lettering as a hobby while studying advertising in college. Over the next few years (and thanks to the power of the internet), she leveraged a few clever passion projects into a thriving design career.

When she's not designing, you can probably find her cooking an elaborate vegetarian meal at home or finally making her way through the niche craft supplies she bought last year.
