From Meg:

I think affirmations are definitely useful and also extremely silly. They help you set an intention by saying the same phrase to yourself over and over again. And, maybe you can trick your brain into thinking it’s true? Sure! But have you ever dabbled in affirmations? It can feel incredibly uncomfortable to listen to them and even more embarrassing to say one out loud to yourself. Well I’m here to take that squirmy feeling and make it even squirmier.

When I started my new meditation and mindfulness podcast, Sit There & Do Nothing, I wanted to take the traditionally serious act of meditation and make it lighthearted and fun. I went through an exploratory process of learning about mindfulness acts (including affirmations) and was determined to make it all a bit funnier. So, this goofy podcast was born; creating a part-comedy, part-useful experience to put you into a better mood.

This week’s episode is my first affirmation special and it’s all about being a likable person. Sure, I say “I am a likable person” to you about a dozen times so you can bonk it into your head, but I also go into other likability-centric phrases like, “More than one baby’s first words have been about how much they like me, specifically”, “When I’m at a park, dogs throw frisbees to me.”, and “Bananas peel themselves when I enter a room.” By intention-setting and being more lighthearted for just a few minutes, I think, together, we can create a more humor-filled, mindful world. We just have to let go of taking ourselves too seriously and give into a little weird.

Your assignment: Letter or make a typographic layout of a fictitious statement about how likable you are.

Need help? Try these examples!

  • People choose to sit at the toilet stall next to mine

  • Businesses write positive yelp reviews about me

  • Instagram is developing a filter to turn everyones face into mine

  • Every time I’m on a trip to the coast, whales beach themselves just to say hi to me

Don’t forget to use the #HOMwork and #HOMwork2020 hashtags and tag @darngooood and @homsweethom when you post your work on Instagram. We’ll be sharing our favorites in our Stories all week!

Lauren Hom is a designer, letterer, and educator. A self-proclaimed "artist with a business brain", she picked up hand lettering as a hobby while studying advertising in college. Over the next few years (and thanks to the power of the internet), she leveraged a few clever passion projects into a thriving design career.

When she's not designing, you can probably find her cooking an elaborate vegetarian meal at home or finally making her way through the niche craft supplies she bought last year.
