WEEK 9 - The power of starting small…

Hey there, thanks for joining us for Week 9 of HOMwork 2020!

Have you ever been excited to start a project or learn a new skill…and then get overwhelmed by how much there is to do?

(Yup, I'm raising MY hand right now.)

One of the projects I’ve always wanted to participate in is 36 Days of Type, an annual creative challenge to draw all 26 letters of the Latin alphabet (A–Z), plus ten single-digit numerals (0–9). It was founded by Nina Sans and Rafa Goicoechea, two graphic designers who wanted to challenge themselves to create something new and experiment every day.

Every year, I watch as THOUSANDS of beautiful letters fill my Instagram newsfeed around this time of year. I think about participating…but then tell myself “There’s no way I’ll be able to complete all 36 characters, so why even try?”

And that’s exactly what happens. I stop myself from trying.

But this year is a new year, and 36 Days of Type is partnering with @AdobeDrawing to spread the challenge even further. So when Adobe asked if I wanted to partner on a #HOMwork related to 36 Days of Type, I took it as a sign that this year I had to write a different story.

I’m breaking old habits and *finally* going to try participating in 36 Days of Type! And most importantly? I refuse to beat myself up for not doing *all* of them because I know even creating a little is better than creating nothing at all.

If you want a beautiful lettering portfolio, you have to start with one letter.
If you want to write a book, you have to start with one word.
If you want to grow, you have to start somewhere.

Your assignment: Illustrate or design your favorite letter!

If you want to follow the entire 36 Days of Type challenge, start with the letter A. But if you just want to pop in for some fun, design any letter you want. Bonus points for combining it with a subject you feel passionate about, like I did with my A and pie since I love to bake in my spare time.

After you create your letter, make sure to share it on Instagram with the hashtag #HOMwork2020 and #36daysoftype. Don’t forget to tag @adobedrawing and me @homsweethom when you post. I’ll be sharing my favorites in my Story all week!

Looking forward to seeing all of your letters in my feed this upcoming month. And hopefully you’ll see a few of mine :)

Lauren Hom is a designer, letterer, and educator. A self-proclaimed "artist with a business brain", she picked up hand lettering as a hobby while studying advertising in college. Over the next few years (and thanks to the power of the internet), she leveraged a few clever passion projects into a thriving design career.

When she's not designing, you can probably find her cooking an elaborate vegetarian meal at home or finally making her way through the niche craft supplies she bought last year.
