WEEK 22
This week, I'm excited to introduce Kat Goodloe as our guest teacher!
Kat is a commercial illustrator and letterer based in Dallas, TX, known for her bright color palettes, playful letterforms and bold, colorful illustrations that empower individuals to be fearlessly themselves.
She's had the pleasure of working with clients like Universal, HarperCollins, Valiant Comics, & Scholastic. Kat is happiest when she's creating, so when she's not making fun things for clients, you can find her developing characters of my own & watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
From Kat:
So I’ve kind of lacked a filter from my brain to my mouth all my life; anyone else??
That was the starting point for my Passion to Paid project: Candid Gift Cards. It's aimed to be a series of humorous gift cards from your most blunt friend (who loves you, of course)!
I've always been fascinated with gift cards because of the need to create an eye-catching design with limited space for type and illustration. This project concept seemed like the perfect opportunity to push myself to get a limited message across and put my filterless brain to legit use!
I have to say, Candid Gift Cards hasn't brought me any actual gift card jobs yet, HOWEVER it has led to countless publication jobs requesting that I do the book cover illustration as well as the title lettering (which means you get to ask for more money doing both $$$).
Your assignment: Make a gift card you wish existed.
Caption idea: Tell us about the inspiration behind your gift card! Did a certain friend, event, or story inspire it? And what do you imagine yourself (or another recipient of the card) spending it on?
So break out the loving sarcasm and get to making a gift card you wish existed! I can't wait to see what you come up with!!
