WEEK 45 - I’m making a career pivot...

Hey there, thanks for joining us for Week 45 of HOMwork 2020!

I’m turning 30 this weekend.

And honestly? I can’t wait!

Sometimes I think “Woah, I’ve already lived a third of my life!”

That thought can be a little bit of a bummer if I’m honest.

But after some reflection, I realized that I’ve done SO MUCH in these first 30 years, both professionally and personally...

Which means I still have two more 30-year blocks to work with!

That’s a lot of time - I could do (or be) anything.

It’s so easy to get caught up in how much time has already passed us by or what opportunities we’ve missed, but we all have the ability to dream about our future and take action to make those dreams happen, even the most seasoned among us.

The question of what you want to be when you grow up is just as valid at 30 (or 40, or 60!) as it was when you were ten.

As kids, we allowed ourselves to dream so much more because we weren’t as jaded. So, rather than thinking in terms of strategy or reverse engineering, this week’s assignment is about the joy of dreaming big and projecting amazing things into our future, even more “grown up” selves.

To be clear: this assignment isn’t about what you wanted to be when you were a kid. It’s about what you want to be in the future from now, because we’re technically growing up until the day we die. If it helps, think of this as a more playful version of “where do you see yourself in 10 years?”

Which leads me to this week’s assignment…

Your assignment: Design a piece based on what you want to be in the future.

For me, it’s fulfilling a lifelong dream of going to culinary school! I’m excited to announce that I’m planning on enrolling in 2023 and taking a 1-year sabbatical from client work.

Not sure where I’ll attend or what I’ll do with my new degree...but I’m sure I’ll combine it with my passion for art in an interesting way. I’ll share more details as they unfold :)

Thought starters:

You can use my piece for inspiration and fill in the blank: “When I grow up I want to _______.”

You don’t need to choose something career-related! Here are some ideas for non-career related ways to fill in that blank:

  • ...be fluent in ASL.

  • ...have a reputation for being kind.

  • ...know how to work a pottery wheel.

  • ...be a dad.

  • ...be a good dancer.

Creative tip:

Consider ways to reflect your chosen future in the lettering style or in any supplemental illustration you might create. For example, the lettering style for “green thumb” might look organic and fluid, while the lettering style for “ceramics whiz” might look more blocky and constructed.

Don’t forget to use the hashtag #HOMwork2020 and tag me @homsweethom when you post your art. I’ll be sharing some of my favorites in IG Stories all week.

Can’t wait to see what your future holds!

PS: Want to get me a birthday present? Here are two ideas for small things you can do to celebrate with me:

  1. Carve out some “me time” and unapologetically spend it doing something that nourishes you. Simply knowing that creative people like you are enjoying themselves brings me so much joy.

    and/or

  2. If you’ve got a little cash to spare, join me in making donations to Democratic candidates Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock to help them win their Georgia Senate run-off races. These races will decide control of the United States Senate in January (wild!), so I think every bit helps.

Lauren Hom is a designer, letterer, and educator. A self-proclaimed "artist with a business brain", she picked up hand lettering as a hobby while studying advertising in college. Over the next few years (and thanks to the power of the internet), she leveraged a few clever passion projects into a thriving design career.

When she's not designing, you can probably find her cooking an elaborate vegetarian meal at home or finally making her way through the niche craft supplies she bought last year.
